Hi Fellow Orienteers!
Great to see you all in Tar Holler. As promised, here's my route order.
Start, up hill to 44, continue along ridge NE then north, then NW, then down holler to 50, north up the stream to the gate, across road then NE along contours to 70, then directly west to the road, and then on the road to junction, then along the ridge to 52, back out to the road junction and south on the road to 33, west on trail to junction, then north on trail, then west on ridge, then down east side of holler to 81, south across the stream, up to the trail, then SW on trail to the stream, then SE up the spur to 62, continue east and follow trail to 42, continue down spur and then SW down stream, then east on road, east up spur to 71, continue east to road, north on road past fire tower (kinda pissed there was no CP at top of tower) for almost a kilometer to saddle, then NE downslope to 43, continue NE down holler, then north up to 40, back down, then SE and SW through "cabin area", and SE up holler to 30, follow trail SE to saddle, then SW downslope and south down stream to 53, east upslope to trail, SE on trail then east and north along ridge to 61. Spent several minutes trying to convince myself that this was indeed the bonus CP. Nervously continued when 96% sure. Downslope east to road then out to SR 327, south on road for a bit, then cut east across toe of ridge to avoid homes (and folk who may not take kindly to a smart azz from NYC) and directly up spur to 80, follow logging road north then west down spur (MUD!), then north up stream, then NW upslope to 51, then SW downslope to SR327, back up park road, then north up spur to 31, continue up spur, then north on ridge to 34, continue north to trail, then NE on trail, then east on ridge, then NE downslope to 60, back out west to trail, continue west along trail down spur, then NW past parking area, then north up holler to 32. Follow trail SE to finish.
Notes:
1) My lower legs are shreaded. I even have scratches on my face, arms and chest.
2) Larry, bushwhack from 53 to 71? Why? Nice trail and road man!
3) Fell 20+ times. Only my ego got hurt.
4) Remember to take more food. Bonked during last hour.
5) Almost forgot to take my compass. Yet again.
6) Thanks to Joe Garland for sharing some electrolyte tabs a few minutes before the start. I forgot those too!
7) Being ADHD is not a good prerequisite for rogaines.
8) Going clockwise on my route and leaving 32 to the end would have worked just as good I think.

Waldo and Piorkowski (Over the Hill Gang, OTHG) route:
40,43,62,42,71,30,53,61 (skipped 80, 51, as we determined not enough time), 31,60,44,50,70,52 (skipped 81, not enough time) 33,32,HH 3 skips total.
Only one team (solo) went with us to #40 at the start.
Saw R2D2 at #61. Did you guys remember to figure out the bonus here?
From #30 to #53, we went SSW off trail just as the trail started climbing. That was one tough slog down the hill and down the watercourse to #53.
Briars were thick on the ridge 'trail' to #61.
Went with All Terrain Females on the out and back to #60.
Saw Larry's teammate from Sleepy Hollow as he was going to #50 and we were coming out of it. Shorts! Aargh! Painful to watch.
Slipped on the ice a few times on the road from #70 to #52, really tricky footing.
We actually got part way up the hillside to #81 when I determined we just didn't have enough time to go up and over, and still finish in time. (we finished with 8 minutes to spare).
So abandoning #81 we then went up the watercourse to #33, downed trees all over the place, really tough going. Had we gone to #81, then took the trail to #33, it would have been a lot faster.

The two events that I have attended by NSF have been challenging from a navigation and endurace standpoint, keep up the great work!

I was hoping for another great shirt. Otherwise everything was great. Of course it helped winning the $40 door prize (paid for the gas). Loved the picture bonus control.
Organization is one of the best I've experienced. It is a great idea to raffle off prizes so that everyone has an equal chance to get swag. I don't think anything needs to be changed - I would prefer more CPs than less, but I'm sure that's more work for you. Food was great. The fact that you ran out means people wanted to stay and enjoy it after the race, rather than getting home to their families.
The event was fantastic! When you run a 5K, and it's over, you have 20 odd minutes to reflect upon. When you do one of your events, you get 6 hours of memories, and with map in hand, get to relive each moment, and try to figure out other ways of clearing the course. Now my team is playing the "what if" game, and looking forward to the next adventure.
Cheers,

Chuck and Tony,
You guys put on a great race! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the adventure!
We look forward to running many more adventures with you guys!
you guys are doing a fantastic job and we really appreciate your efforts. Matt suggests you put the CPs in less conspicuous places., ie on the side of hills instead of on top. Of course, the one CP that was on the side of the hill is the only one we didn't find. The rest we banged our face off. He likes the challenge of finding CPs that don't have defined attack points. These types of CPs force me to be precise on my pace count, so..... I like the ones in defined terrain. our dog doesn't care where the CPs are, but suggests you leave scooby snacks at each CP. keep the faith.
I so appreciate that you guys are contributing to adventure sports in Ohio. Keep up the great work! The most important thing for me is a challenging course with accurately-placed CPs. Second is the fun aspect and grub after the event. You did a super job on both accounts!

double check with GPS is the best part of the race. starting on time...no delays. great time!
This was our first Rogaine, and we had a great time. Fortunately, we had an experienced couple with us for the first four hours, which was extremely helpful in learning how to read the maps. I really appreciated the fact that I had my own map to look at. The food was great, and the fires were wonderful, after the event. The weather turned out to be way better than I expected...I know you have no control over that, and I suppose that is a big part of the challenge in doing this type of event, this time of year!
We really enjoyed the race. I agree with the comments after last year's race, you really should get out there with a weed wacker and get rid of those briars :)
Keep up the good work. I liked the bonus CP concept, although we looked at another one from all angles for 3 minutes before deciding it was the wrong one. One look at 61 and I knew that was the one. Here's an idea for a bonus CP: take a photo of a CP, but you have to decide which one it is before you start. I actually picked #61 before we started the rogaine as being the most likely candidate. It looked like it was facing downhill, it was on a spur (note the curvature of the ground just behind the control), and it must have been facing anywhere from NW to NE because of the sun on the opposite ridge.
You put on a good race. The maps were accurate, and the waterproof paper was an added bonus. There were enough checkpoints to make the race challenging to racers of all levels of ability. The food was good (but after a race almost anything tastes good). The results were posted in a reasonable time. The race reminded me of a Brad Hunt race. My only suggestion is to allow racers to circle the checkpoints they got when they turn in their scorecards.
This was the first event (of this kind) for both me and my teammate. We really enjoyed the event and are planning on participating in more, and will likely pull a few more people along. In the mean time I need to work on my conditioning again, but am not complaining.
It was a great event.
Great event - well worth my time and money. I personally found the checkpoint locations challenging overall. Thanks much for the great organization. I'm looking forward to more events. Thanks, Ken
Nice job. Just wish you were a little closer to Cleveland.
