Winning route and narrative.
Sleepy Hollow Rogaine - 11/14/2009 - Mark Lattanzi and Aaron Rourke
Our total distance was almost exactly equal to a marathon.
This was 21% farther than the straight-line distance between controls (21.6 miles).
We did not go out of our way to use trails & roads.
60% was bushwacking, and 40% was on trail or road.
The time duration of our segments averaged 20.3 minutes - 19 in daylight and 28 in the dark (1.5 times longer).
The thirty-two segments averaged 0.8 miles (1.3 km).
Average climb was 216 feet. Ridges are generally about 300 feet above the local drainages,
so we averaged two climb-outs for every three segments.

Tony and Chuck.....

Great race as usual....Once again the most accurate maps that anyone puts together...points are dead on where they say they will be...i also love the fact that every team member gets a copy of the map that way each is envolved in the entire race..

The one suggestion i have is to clarify the team must stay together rule...my brother and i have always interpretted it as staying very close to each other ie maybe we will be 100' feet or so apart as we look for a point, however this race we saw several teams that would send one person "solo" to punch the point while the other rests and looks at the map....for example the ridge where the northern water drop was we saw a couple teams have one person waiting near the water while the other ran out the ridge to punch the point... Is this legal?

Outside of that question you guys continue to do a great job, we always look forward to your races....thanks

Absolutely loved it. This is the first event put on by NSF that I have done and my team was extremely happy. I have done numerous adventure races and many ultras and normally deal with the commonly “misplaced” CPs but could not believe the accuracy of these points—dead on every one! I brought my brother in-law out for his first ever race at 15 years old and he stuck it out for eleven of the 12 hours and although he was pretty exhausted afterwards, he cannot stop talking about it. We hope to do the Shawnee 24 hour next year and this should give him enough time to get into a little better shape but I’m proud of him. The food, well not much more to say except WOW, I couldn’t get enough. The maps—same thing. The most detailed accurate maps I have seen to date. You guys put on a great first class event and I thank you for making this a wonderful time for my team and a great weekend.

My only suggestion, and I’m sure there is a reason to why you do not do it, but solos???? Why not? I do almost all my events as a solo and enjoy the solitude and self reliance. But again, I’m sure there is a good reason.
Thanks again from Team Monarch!

My team had a great time. We opted to hit the south side of the park first, and were rewarded by being able to get to most of those checkpoints during daylight hours. The only downside is that we were unable to locate the water drop down there.

We opted for a much needed rest and hot meal at the hash house (having food waiting there gave us the boost we needed to recover a bit before heading back out) before tackling a handful of checkpoints to the north.

All in all, we all had fun, got sidetracked very few times, and managed to hit all the checkpoints we attempted.

Dear Chuck and Tony,

Thanks for putting on such a great event. We are blessed here in Saint Louis with a pretty good orienteering club, even a 30 control permanant course. It made training for our first rogaine a lot easier, especially the night-O portion. My parnter and I have trail running backgrounds. He's a 2:47 marathoner and I've finished 62 ultras. I have to admit, your rogaine wasn't what I expected. I thought it would physically moderate and navigationally challenging. It was the exact opposite. That is one hilly park. The only suggestion I have is that with the hot temps, I wished you'd a put another water drop on the east side of the course. But other than that, we had a great time, it was a beautiful day, a great park, fun atmosphere and excellent post event food. I've already checked out your 2010 schedule and hope to make it to most of them.

Cheers!

Hey Guys. Bill and I had an awesome race. Our plan was to get all the northern CP's before dark then hit the southern CP's at night and to skip all the CP's east. We did an awesome job with that, stuck to the plan and never made a mistake. For me its cool to see my improvements in navigating over this last year. After the really bad experience of trying to navigate at dark in the Green Corn race I was a bit apprehensive about the night portion of this race. But this race was much better, it seems staying with the map and on compass bearing really works... I really like your maps and courses I have learned a lot from them. Bill and I make a great team - as you know Bill is quite the clown and always positive and motivated - he keeps me moving and I keep us on the right track. There was on point on the trail north where we decided to cut off a loop in the trail to "save time". That turned into a short but steep bushwhack that was so thick we were crawling at one point and stuck in the briers - we both just laughed at our awesome idea to try and save time. I look forward to your races next year. I will see you guys Feb 6th at the Cabin Fever. Rob
